DeSoto County Florida Economic Development Office commissioned Site Selection Group to perform a Competative Community Assessment. SSG found:
"SSG believes the County’s most powerful value proposition is its geographic proximity to approximately 16.5 million people living in central and southern Florida, as well as the savings it can offer companies currently located in the large regional metropolitan areas.
SSG conducted a 10-year operating cost analysis that compared the cost of operating a typical production and distribution facility in DeSoto County to Orlando, Tampa, and Miami. When factoring wages and salaries, employee training, property and sales tax, and real estate costs, DeSoto County offered an operating cost savings of 12%. The scenario based on 75 employees and 100,000 sf building on 20 acres."
When noting Wal-Mart's location of a distribution center in DeSoto County, Florida, Site selection group noted that the significant investment Wal-Mart made in locating their distribution center should be a recommendation to other distribution and logistics companies. The report stated, "Wal-Mart’s decision to locate their distribution center in DeSoto County required significant due diligence. Wal-Mart is the leader when it comes to consumer products distribution and so it is reasonable to conclude that the logistics advantages enjoyed by Wal-Mart would also be enjoyed by other companies that serve similar markets."
